Features
Description
The KX 971 is a compact media converter that
· Data Rates DC to 115 kbps at 2 km
allows RS-232 signals to be transmitted over fiber
· Powered by RS-232 Host Port Signals
optic media, without requiring an external power
· Full Duplex Asynchronous Operation
source. This extends the range of RS-232
transmission from 15 meters to 2 km with multi-
· Indicating LEDs (RX, PWR, TX)
mode fiber. The KX 971 is designed to obtain power
· 9 pins Female RS-232 Connector
through the serial port, from the attached device.
· CE Compliant
Two RS-232 devices can be connected with fiber
optic media in full duplex transmission mode, using

a pair of KX 971 converters. Moreover, using fiber
optic media isolates the devices from dangerous
increases in ground potential, ground loops, and
electrical EMI/RFI noise. This greatly reduces RF
radiation and susceptibility to electromagnetic
radiation, and enhances data security.
WARNING! RS232 ports without control signals may not have
enough power to power the KX 971 sufficiently for reliable data
communications. The user may have to bring in external power
through RTS (pin 7), CTS (pin8), DSR (pin 6), DCD (pin ), or DTR (pin 4)
and GND (pin 5). The power needs to be at least 5 to 12VDC across
serial resistance 100 ohm.
